Thornton Road Resources

Two new resources have been added to the web site. Both relate to the Small area plan developed in 2017 (sorry it took so long) which identified goals for future development on Thornton Road

Clean up Event

Hello Neighbors, 
The South Lamar Neighborhood Association has adopted Tom Lasseter Park. I’m (Mark Schwitau) the POC for the park, …. and a go-between for communication with the Parks and Recreation Department.
Our little gem of a park on Del Curto is due for some TLC. Our first community get together will be Saturday, 25 May (8:30AM-12:00). For this first get together we are just doing a quick general clean-up of the park. Primarily simple tasks that only require a desire to help keep the park special. 
1. Sweeping the pavilion, basketball court and picnic areas
2. Weeding around gravel path areas and any other obvious areas
3. Raking gravel back into its proper place (the path)
4. Putting “run-away” wood chips back into the playground pit
5. Picking up trash … and any other simple house cleaning.
Note*: We will not be trimming trees, clearing invasive/poisonous plant species, creek dredging or removing bamboo at this time. 
If you love our little park and consider yourself “pro earth” or a “friend of nature” … consider putting your muscle where your mouth is and helping us out. The idea is to keep this first meetup light and easy. A chance to meet some other families/neighbors who also care about the park … and hopefully build some momentum for more involved park improvements.
If you totally “zen out” while popping weeds, please bring your favorite weed tool otherwise, bring: 
1. A rake/broom
2. Some garden gloves
3. Some drinking water (there is a water fountain on the property)
4. Bug Spray, sun lotion
5. Kids are welcome to join in on these simple tasks (under supervision)
I’ll bring some bags for weeds and garbage.
Come for as long or short as you like. Again, this is a quick clean up and a chance to meet. This is by no means a heavy lifting kind of day. Just a start. I’d also like to see if there is any appetite for making this a regular group that is interested in meeting somewhat regularly (monthly, quarterly, project dependent ???).
I’ll have a (Parks Department) sign-up tool available a bit later, but for now … put a little reminder on your calendar.
Between our neighborhood volunteers and the Parks and Recreation Department, we can keep this little green space special for years to come.

Lasseter Park Update

Hello all, I’m Mark Schwitau
I recently signed up to “adopt the park” and be the point of contact for park issues within our community. The program essentially makes it easier for us to communicate with the Austin Parks Department and work with them to either improve and/or maintain our little gem of a green space on Del Curto.
The sign up process on-line required me (it was a required field*) to have an alternate … so if you love the park, use the park, have kids or dogs who love the park … and you want to see it prosper, please consider dipping that one little pinky toe into the process. Simply contact me and let me know that you want to be “the alternate POC” for the program. It’s not a “heavyweight” duty by any means … but the program itself does have the ability to make a real and measured impact in our tiny oasis of green space. 
This park is especially important as so many more citizens are moving into the neighborhood and there is precious little open “public space” for us to use as a community. Where else in the South Lamar Neighborhood can you throw a frisbee, have an Easter egg hunt, a birthday party, … or simply let your kids run free without worry from heavy traffic? Let me know if you love the park and want to have a hand in improving it.

Del Curto Storm Drain Improvements Project At the public meeting on January 23, we were asked how proposed improvements at the intersection of Bluebonnet Lane and South Lamar Blvd. would affect our storm drain project. We promised to look into this and now have some more information to share with you. The improvements to that particular intersection are included in the proposed South Lamar Corridor Construction Plan. The plan was released on February 7 and will need to be approved by the Austin City Council. Among other things, the South Lamar plan calls for turn lane modifications at Bluebonnet Lane and South Lamar Blvd. The plan also calls for installation of a roundabout at Bluebonnet Lane and Del Curto. Both of these locations overlap with our storm drain project. The South Lamar plan also includes drainage improvements at the Bluebonnet intersection. These drainage improvements will be connected to the new storm drain system that we are installing. We have talked to the South Lamar corridor team about our project, and we will continue to coordinate with them. Check out the graphic below for more information about the South Lamar plan.
